There’s something magical about reading aloud to your kids. Whether it’s a bedtime story or a cozy homeschool morning, sharing a book together creates lasting memories. My oldest just turned 12, and she still loves to sit and listen to me read. I’ve learned that picture books aren’t just for little ones—beautiful storytelling, humor, and interactive elements make them engaging for kids of all ages.
Reading aloud is one of the best ways to nurture a love of books in kids of all ages. Whether you’re sharing a favorite classic or discovering something new, these “10 Must-Read Picture Books” will captivate kids and make storytime unforgettable for the whole family!
1. Falling for Rapunzel by Leah Wilcox
This fractured fairy tale has me giggling every time I pick it up. The prince wants to rescue Rapunzel from her tower, but they just can’t seem to work out their communication. Rapunzel throws down everything but her hair— including her underwear! This laugh-out-loud book is sure to be a favorite.
2. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst
A classic for a reason! We’ve all had days where nothing seems to go our way, and Alexander’s dramatic complaints make this book even more fun to read aloud. The iconic line—“Even in Australia!”—never fails to get a laugh.
3. Never too Little to Love by Jeanna Willis
This sweet story about the friendship between Mouse and Giraffe will melt your heart. Mouse just can’t seem to get on Giraffe’s level, but a surprise act of kindness proves that you’re never too little to love!
4. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
Each crayon has a hilarious grievance in this witty and imaginative book. My kids absolutely love hearing the crayons’ different personalities, and I appreciate the way it introduces empathy and perspective-taking. Plus, Duncan’s creative solution at the end is a great conversation starter!
5. There’s a Dragon in Your Book by Tom Fletcher
Interactive picture books are a huge hit in my house, and this one does not disappoint! Kids have to shake, blow, and interact with the story as they chase the dragon through its pages. If your little one loves to move and giggle during storytime, this book is perfect.
6. Press Here by Herve Tullet
Another fantastic interactive book, Press Here turns reading into an adventure. My kids love tapping the dots, shaking the pages, and watching the simple illustrations “come to life.” I’m sure your young readers will be mesmerized as well.
7. Mirror, Mirror by Marilyn Singer
The creativity in Mirror, Mirror makes this one of my all-time favorite pictures books. Singer writes in verse and then in reverse to tell unique poems from two different perspectives. These fairy tale inspired poems are sure to keep readers engaged.
8. The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds
This inspiring story encourages creativity and confidence. It reminds young artists (and adults!) that all it takes to begin is a single dot. I think this book is especially wonderful for any child who’s hesitant to start something new.
9. Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems
Leonardo the Terrible Monster may be my all-time favorite picture book. Leonardo wants so badly to be a terrible, scary monster, until a new friend helps him see that what he really wants is to be a wonderful friend.
10. I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont
I love musical books and this rhythmic, rhyming book is impossible to read without singing! Kids will love the silly, repetitive chorus and the colorful, chaotic illustrations. If your family enjoys musical books, this one is a must-have.
These are just a few of my favorite read-alouds, but I’d love to hear yours! What picture books bring joy to your homeschool? Drop your favorites in the comments or tag me on Instagram (@thehomeschoollibrarian) and share your recommendations!
