The American Revolution is one of the most pivotal events in American history, shaping the foundation of the United States as we know it today. But teaching it to kids in a way that is both engaging and meaningful can sometimes feel overwhelming. How do you go beyond memorizing dates and battles to help your children truly understand the causes, conflicts, and key figures of the Revolution?

In my experience, one of the best ways to bring history to life is through books! Books offer unique perspectives and compelling stories that morph history from rote facts into fascinating narratives. The five books I’m sharing today offer fresh perspectives into the American Revolution that will transport young readers straight into the action.

We have tested all of these books out in our homeschool and we have found them to be excellent discussion starters, packed with valuable information. I hope as you explore these fantastic resources you will find at least one that will help make your homeschool history both educational and exciting this year.

George vs. George by Rosalyn Schanzer

Growing up in an American public school, I never gave much thought to the British perspective on the American Revolution, so I love that this book offers both perspectives of the war. Kids (and adults) will get a well-rounded and balanced view of the American Revolution through the opposing perspectives of George Washington and King George III.

When Washington Crossed the Delaware by Lynne Cheney

The beautiful illustrations in this book are captivating. The vivid imagery paired with great storytelling makes one of the most pivotal moments of the Revolution come to life on the pages as you read about Washington leading his men across the Delaware.

The Side-by-Side Declaration of Independence by David & Stephanie Miles

I want to gush about this book. On one side of the book you can read the original words of the Declaration of Independence while on the other side you can read a plain English version of the Declaration. My kids learned so much going through this book (and so did I). The author does a fabulous job writing in a way that readers of all ages can understand. I highly recommend this book for all homeschooling families!

The Interactive Constitution by David Miles

This book is another favorite of mine! With moving pieces, lift-the-flaps, and more, this interactive book does a fabulous job at explaining the Constitution to kids. It even provides a light introduction to the three branches of government and is the perfect book for introducing government to elementary-aged kids.

The Founding Fathers by Jonah Winter

The Founding Fathers is a great introduction to key figures of the American Revolution. The author does a great job highlighting their individual contributions and unique personalities. My kids also enjoyed the whimsical illustrations and quick facts listed about each Founding Father.

Teaching the American Revolution in your homeschool doesn’t have to be boring! With well-crafted books, you can captivate your kids while giving them a strong foundation in American history.
